History of The Purple Iris at The Hartwood Mansion

The Hartwood Mansion was commissioned by George W.F. Mulliss, and industrialist, who came to Martinsburg in 1895. The mansion was designed by architect Alexander Merchant and constructed in 1929.
Hartwood is a superb example of Neo-Georgian Revival architecture. Superior design and craftsmanship have been artistically and gracefully blended to provide ambiance of elegance and warmth. Beautifully situated on the crest of a gently sloping hill dotted with stately trees and floral gardens, Hartwood is an impressive structure built of steel reinforced, eight inch thick, Pennsylvania blue limestone.
Mr. Mulliss began his long career with the Kilbourn Knitting Machine Company in 1897, shortly after arriving in Martinsburg and was made President of the local company in 1932, after Kilbourn was taken over by the Inter Woven Mills. By 1940 the mill, under Mr. Mulliss’ guidance, had reached its heyday employing fifteen hundred people, by far the largest employer in Berkeley County.
Mr. Mulliss died in 1953; The Kilbourn Mill buildings were listed on the National Register in 1980, as a complex of Romanesque Revival industrial buildings.
Hartwood became the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lang in 1955.
The Mansion was fully restored in 1998 and a ballroom was added to the mansion.
Chef Daniel Harshbarger and his wife Tiffany are the current owners.

About The Owners: Chef Daniel Harshbarger along with his wife Tiffany Harshbarger are the proprietors of The Purple Iris. Together with Daniel’s back of the house expertise and Tiffany’s knowledge of front of the house operations they work as a team to make ones experience at The Purple Iris a memorable affair.

Daniel is a 1993 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. Upon his graduation of the CIA, Daniel was a chef at the Sheraton Washington Hotel in Washington, D.C. and Executive Chef at the Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, MD. In 1999 Daniel became the chef/owner of the Catoctin Inn and Catering in Buckeystown, MD and in 2002 Daniel and Tiffany became the owners of The Purple Iris.

In the News: 2015 Chef Dan and his wife Tiffany travel to Baku, Azerbaijan for America week. During their time here Chef Dan and Tiffany make several appearances on talk shows showcasing and preparing American cuisine. Tiffany also talks about weddings in American and how they differ from weddings in Azerbaijan. While there Chef Dan also visits a local culinary school, shops at local farm markets, judges a pie contest, cooks for a family in the village of Sheki, prepares food for the American Ambassadors reception, and attends a wedding while taking in the Azerbaijan cuisine and culture.
